Why was I up at 8am on a Sunday morning on my last vacation day? Yes, had to be one of Fantasia movie huh? Today at 11h45am was the canadian premiere of the animation movie: 'Legend of the Millennium dragon' from the director Hirotsugu Kawasaki. He directed also 'Spriggan' and on Naruto movie.
When I first saw the trailer my 1st thoughts were: 'Princess Mononoke meet Spirited away meet Naruto'. And this was not quite far off. Althought 'Legend of the Millennium Dragon' is very far from the Ghibli quality. I do like anything that talks about old japansese legends like: 'Yamata no Orochi' (the dragon with the 8 heads) or anythin related to Amaterasu (the sun goddess). But in that movie, I didn't feel connected to the main characters. I must say that all that is environment art was super pretty! But often the main characters were disproportionate and animations were sloppy. Also the music choice for the movie.... the kind of music you would find in a Naruto battle but now.. it just felt awkward and music was lasting way too long, at many point I just wanted to music to end.
The story was not so bad, a young school boy that travel in times (who doesn't like time travel!?) and is caught in a battle between so called 'Oni'(demons) and some wariors that try to protect their village in an ancient Kyoto. And it takes him a while to find out what is 'right' to do and take a side. And of course, everything ends in a good way.
I recommend this as a rental, not much impressed with it...Maybe I'm being too picky?
